It was an incredible honor to photograph this family as they gathered for their mother’s celebration of life. The patriarch of the family was proud to have his eight adult children, their spouses, and his grandchildren ranging from 5 years old to college age, together. We brought 25 loved ones into our St. Paul studio for a rare and deeply meaningful generation portrait session.
What made this day even more poignant was that it had been over nine years since the family had last taken a full group portrait. In that time, so much as changed, especially the growing legacy of little ones who hadn’t yet been in a portrait with all their cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandpa. It was so special to see this family reunite and share connection after so many years. To finally bring everyone together, in honor of their late matriarch, was so special to witness.
PLANNING FOR A LEGACY PORTRAIT
With such a large group and a limited timeframe, careful planning was essential. I worked with the family in advance to learn names, create a detailed shot list, and coordinate the order of photos. We staggered arrivals so that the younger children wouldn’t have to wait long, and I even invested in a rolling chair so their grandfather, who has limited mobility, could comfortably participate in the portraits. Seeing him surrounded by his children and grandchildren was a moment full of so much love.
INCLUDING GRANDMA
One of the most touching elements of this portrait session was the inclusion of the late family matriarch in the photos. A framed portrait of her was placed in several group shots, including the full family portrait, serving as a beautiful reminder of her presence and the legacy she created.
A LEGACY
With siblings spread across the country, half born in Laos and half born in the United States, this gathering was especially significant. Though one sister and her family were unable to attend, the portraits created captured the strength of their bonds and the love that continues to hold them all together, no matter how close or how far.
WHY THESE PORTRAITS MATTER
This experience was a powerful reminder of why family portraits matter. Life moves quickly, and tomorrow is never promised. Portraits are not just pictures, they are legacies, heirlooms, and living proof of the love that binds a family. I’m deeply grateful to have captured this generation portrait for this family, especially the grandfather, to help honor his wife’s memory in a way the family will treasure for generations to come.
