In-Studio Winter Family Portraits | Cooper Family

For nearly twenty years, I have had the privilege of photographing this incredible crew year after year. I’ve watched these babies and toddlers become teens, and those teens grew into remarkable young adults.

That kind of timeline is rare. It’s sacred, honestly.

There’s something deeply humbling about being invited back into a family’s life again and again. To witness the connections develop between family members. The new inside jokes. The way personalities unfold. The way confidence builds.

This session was no exception.

This wonderful family walked into the studio on a cold, Minnesota January day wearing the most epic winter coats I have ever seen.

Bold. Textured. Dramatic.

I laughed and immediately said, “Don’t you dare take those off.” We had to capture this style, the energy!

SPREAD THE CONFIDENCE

Now, one of the amazing experiences as a photographer is watching these children grow into extraordinary young adults.

When children grow up being photographed consistently, something powerful happens. They don’t freeze in front of the camera. They don’t shrink. They show up fully themselves.

They experiment. They suggest poses. They lean into the goofiness.

My sides were sore from laughing because these young adults kept inventing their own poses. Some were surprisingly editorial. Others were wildly ridiculous. Every single one was pure joy.

That kind of ease doesn’t happen by accident.

It comes from years of being seen.

From parents who make space to celebrate their family each year.

From traditions that say, “You matter. This moment matters. Our story matters.”

What I see in this family isn’t just nice portraits to display on a wall.

I see a family who is close. I see young adults who are comfortable in who they are. I see confidence that has been quietly nurtured over time. I see parents who display their love for each other and their children out loud.

Family portraits do more than document growth. They reinforce belonging.

And after almost two decades, I can say this with certainty: when you choose to show up year after year, you aren’t just creating images. You’re building legacy. You’re building connection. You’re building young adults who know they have always been celebrated.

It is an honor beyond words to witness that.
