Senior year is a whirlwind, full of “lasts” and big milestones. It can feel overwhelming, but don’t let this moment pass without capturing the real you. At Block Portrait Studios, we create senior portraits that showcase your style, your passions, and your personality.

Let’s make your senior session fun, relaxed, and completely stress-free! To help, we’ve put together answers to the most common questions we hear from seniors and parents about what to expect during a senior portrait session.

WHEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE MY SESSION?

Most seniors prefer summer or fall sessions, when the weather is great, the lighting is perfect, and you can show off your outfit without freezing! We recommend scheduling your session during junior year or early senior year to ensure plenty of time for planning and to receive your portraits before graduation. Booking early also gives you the best options for dates and times during these popular seasons.

HOW DO I STYLE MYSELF? HOW MANY OUTFITS SHOULD I CHOOSE?

Your senior portraits are all about you, so we recommend choosing outfits that truly reflect your style. These portraits are your chance to showcase who you are during this exciting milestone. Most seniors select 1–3 outfits: typically one favorite casual look, one dressier outfit that also works well for headshots, and one outfit that highlights a hobby or activity, like a sports uniform.

During your Portrait Planning and Concept Meeting, we’ll go over your style, outfit choices, and color schemes to make sure every look fits your personality and the vision for your session.

HOW LONG WILL MY SESSION TAKE?

Typically, senior sessions last 1–2 hours, including your Design and Order Appointment. The timing may vary depending on location choices or if you add a hair and makeup session.

CAN I INCLUDE PROPS?

Absolutely! We love when seniors bring props that add a personal touch to their portraits. Whether it’s a musical instrument, sports gear, your favorite car, or even your pet, these items help showcase your personality. During your Portrait Planning and Concept Meeting, we’ll go over any props you want to include and plan how to use them to make your senior portraits truly unique.

WHAT ARE IDEAL LOCATIONS FOR MY SESSION?

Choose a location that resonates with you and reflects the look and feel you want for your senior portraits. During your Portrait Planning and Concept Meeting, we’ll discuss your options and what’s most important to you. Some seniors prefer indoor portraits at our St. Paul studio, others choose their school’s baseball field or gym, and some select meaningful personal locations, like their home or a grandparent’s farm. Many also pick spots with amazing aesthetics, such as striking architecture or breathtaking views. We’ll help you narrow down your vision to select the perfect location—or two—so your portraits turn out exactly as you imagined.
